I guess my main motivation was to make the spec more regular/consistent.
If half the line type markers require a space and half of them don't,
writing an correct client requires constant reference back to the spec
to double check these fine details.  Ideally Gemini should "fit in your
head" easily, as somebody else described it, and consistency goes a long
way toward that.
