I'm not a big fan of *requiring* whitespace after the hash. Markdown, for instance, doesn't require whitespace. That being said, in lieu of an escape character, it would make more sense.

Regardless, I would throw the eternal refrain of the ML back at it on this one: "Work within the limitations of the spec, instead of trying to change the spec."
